Wow your posters are… insightful into what you value at least. Which is apparently division. Was not Christ among the sinners, prostitutes, and otherwise “scum of the earth” according to the religious leaders of his day? I find it amazing that you would dedicate so much effort into designing your mockery of 1,000’s of your brothers in Christ who are doing everything they can to reach out to a world that you have long since rejected. Shame on them for engaging the culture! How dare they try to make a difference. Go ahead and continue wallowing in your self-righteous, God-forsaken, powerless, useless mediocrity. Aside from the occassional glance over our shoulder, no one else is listening to you…
Christ was most certainly ministering and healing among fallen humanity (“Pharisees” and “sinners” alike), but He is calling all people to a better life–one more abundant, sacrificial, separate and holy. Jesus told His own disciples–His closest believers, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” –Matthew 16:24-25.
Me, self-righteous? I think you have something bigger in your own eye “Pastor John”. The Emergent Church is not one that is calling people to deny themselves. In fact, the Emergent types not only engage our fallen culture; they also embrace our fallen culture and secularize the Gospel of Christ beyond recognition. The Emergent churches are busy trying to accomodate worldliness without disrupting people’s lives. If people have to deny themselves, change their lifestyles and take up crosses to be followers of Jesus—why, that’s just too unpopular and divisive.
But Jesus was divisive. In fact, he was brutally executed because He hadn’t yet mastered the Emergent Church marketing techniques to win friends and influence people and bring in lots of tithes and offerings. But you don’t really want to end up like Jesus, do you Pastor? Because you value something more than Truth–your life.
wow, i feel like jesus’ name is being used as a swear word in these comments. not sure how he’d feel about that. perhaps what has happened here is that the evangelicals, dare i say it, embraced modern culture? so much so that they lost their identity in christ and found it instead in the modern style of church. the emergents realized this, and are trying to strip modernity away from the bride of christ (deconstructing), whilst at the same time engaging with post-modern culture to the point that the gospel is understood (like jesus did with his parables etc). and perhaps what is really important here is humility. humility of the modern church to accept where they took modern culture to mean absolute truth, and humility of the emergents to acknowledge that they are just as weak and in danger of going down the same path. maybe then history will not repeat itself and the emergents will keep their identity in christ alone, whilst living in the world. just a thought…or two.
