The Party of King: The Republican Party

On the 45th Anniversary of MLK’s “I Have a Dream Speech,” it might be surprising to remember that Dr. King, Jr. was a Republican.  MLK’s niece also verfies this fact and further explains that resistance most often came from Democrats:

No one batted an eye when President Kennedy opposed the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King. Hardly a ripple of protest was uttered when President Kennedy, through his brother Attorney General Robert Kennedy, had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated on suspicion of being a Communist.

Barack Obama’s acceptance speech tonight will be and is an historic event. But the great irony is that the Republican administrations since the days of Abraham Lincoln through the modern Civil Rights Movement have significantly helped make the first presidential nominee acceptance speech by an African American possible—even though it’s for the Democratic Party.

I don’t believe that most African American support killing babies, and I don’t believe most of them support gay marriage. Why, then, do they feel they’re sheltered under the great big umbrella of liberalism? Seems like their views are way more in line of conservatism, but the liberals are better at their “we care about you” rhetoric….

or maybe the southern strategy had a little bit to do with it.

    just a possibility.

While it is true that at one time it was the Republican party who freed the slaves, fought for the rights of all people and promoted a truly conservative belief, today both parties are shells of thier former selves. You get etiher Fascism or Socialism either way you cannot compare the party of 50 years ago to the bastardization it has today.

And maybe African Americans, like the majority of other Americans prioritize thier issues a little differently than you Ura. Gay marriage and “killing babies” is probably not high up on that list when compared to the state of the Economy and trying to make ends meet trying to deal with the daily crime in empovershed areas, whether or not they will have any health care if they loose thier jobs, you know things that actually affect the individual.
