The Party of King: The Republican Party

On the 45th Anniversary of MLK’s “I Have a Dream Speech,” it might be surprising to remember that Dr. King, Jr. was a Republican.  MLK’s niece also verfies this fact and further explains that resistance most often came from Democrats:

No one batted an eye when President Kennedy opposed the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King. Hardly a ripple of protest was uttered when President Kennedy, through his brother Attorney General Robert Kennedy, had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated on suspicion of being a Communist.

Barack Obama’s acceptance speech tonight will be and is an historic event. But the great irony is that the Republican administrations since the days of Abraham Lincoln through the modern Civil Rights Movement have significantly helped make the first presidential nominee acceptance speech by an African American possible—even though it’s for the Democratic Party.
