Defining Love

At a Christian university I attended, I was blessed in class during the devotional time one day to hear the testimony of a fellow student who left the homosexual lifestyle by the grace of God. His most powerful remarks challenged the politically correct notion that no one should question the love that same-sex couples may have for each other. You could’ve heard a pin drop as he read God’s definition of love in I Corinthians 13:

4) Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

5) does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

6) does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

7) bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8a) Love never fails.

He closed stating emphatically that there is NOTHING resembling true love—God’s definition of love—in the homosexual lifestyle!

And he’s right. Praise God for that testimony! But I’ll preach a step further because in our sex-crazed culture many heterosexual relationships have no idea what true, Biblical, sacrificial love is either. That’s partly why so many families are falling apart. The world needs love; God’s love. And God is calling His people to take a stand and take back and redeem the secular definitions of love, marriage and family for His glory!

Way Beyond “Health of the Mother”

If you didn’t know this already, medical science & technology has advanced in such a way that many women who want their unborn children are encouraged to abort their pregnancies if the “health of the child” is in question.

Just two days ago, a young woman asked for prayer for her baby from all of us in our married couples group. Her OBGYN informed the couple that their baby was developing well in its second trimester, but that the baby’s legs looked a little abnormally bowlegged. The OBGYN then proceeded to ask whether the couple might consider terminating the pregnancy! The couple plans to do further testing, but they have always  planned to have their baby regardless. And good for them! It’s shocking that an OBGYN would suggest an abortion because a child might possibly walk like a bowlegged Texan.

But such considerations are a terrifying reality for future generations. There is less and less tolerance for any disability in our selfish society. American society mostly values perfect people:  young, smart, & strong. For example, Down syndrome has been a major focus by medical groups such as The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists who label the disability as “a disagreeable symptom of less than perfect pregnancy.” ACOG’s obvious solution: better tests and mandatory testing for all pregnant women. This will provide an earlier and more accurate opportunity to terminate the pregnancy (because presumably, only perfect people have lives of any value).

Five or six years ago, a dear friend of mine learned that his unborn nephew’s tests came back positive for Down syndrome. To the couple’s dismay, the OBGYN suggested an abortion. While the family was saddened at the news, they never once considered termination and otherwise decided to take responsibility for the beautiful life they had created. To this day, they’ve never regretted their decision. My friend’s nephew is an energetic young boy who (as it turnes out) does not even have Down syndrome. The OBGYN was wrong (not that it mattered either way to this family). And someday, that young boy will understand how blessed he truly is to have very loving, conscientious, and responsible parents.

In my experience with individuals who have Down syndrome, they love life and are simply the kindest and most compassionate people I’ve ever met. Despite Down syndrome’s health issues, it’s alarming and shameful that those persons are considered “disagreeable” and thereby targeted by our society for extermination.

Sometimes medical science & technology threatens the very things that make us human: love, compassion, & selflessness. Abortion is hardly an impressive medical cure for anything. It simply kills. Down syndrome isn’t the first disability targeted by abortion in history, and it certainly won’t be the last if things continue. No unborn child is safe from abortion in America today “disabled” or not: boy, girl, blue-eyed, brown-eyed, bowlegged, knock-kneed, blonde, red-headed,. . . or just simply unwanted, unloved.

God have mercy on us.
